A safe workplace isn’t a ‘nice to have’, it’s part of the ecosystem that prevents violence, abuse, and harm. Whether we realise it or not, every workplace plays a role. What we choose to ignore, or take action on, can change lives.

Why should employers and corporate organisations care about violence, abuse and harm?

Workplaces are part of the ecosystem in which violence, abuse, and harm happen, and where they can be prevented. They’re not neutral spaces. Every employer has a role to play.

Here’s why:

  • Work may be a lifeline a place of safety and stability for someone experiencing harm at home

  • Workplaces can also be sites of harm including bullying, harassment, coercion, or sexual misconduct

  • Perpetrators may misuse workplace resources such as technology, vehicles, uniforms, or insider knowledge

  • Abuse can be enabled by routine when perpetrators know exactly where and when someone will be

  • Remote and hybrid work adds complexity making it harder to spot signs or create safe disclosure spaces

  • Power and identity matter in majority-White, male, or able-bodied workplaces, those in minoritised groups may face increased risk

  • Workplaces reflect the wider system and are key to challenging harmful norms, cultures, and silences

  • Employers are legally and morally responsible for safeguarding, equality, and employee wellbeing

Creating a safer workplace isn’t about being perfect it’s about paying attention, asking the right questions, and acting with intention.
